两年前在网上查询美国无家可归者专题时，看到一部四年前的小众的一小时纪录片“西雅图正在死去”， 说它小众是因为这样一部著名记者用心采访制作的重要议题纪录片在美国没有多少点击量，发行后至今的四年中纪录片的点击数甚至连那位作者本人的油管订阅者数量都达不到，更不用说它得不到忙于选举和发动制裁围堵的国会议员跟总统副总统议长们的关心观看。
片中大量统计数据和排名分析，比如，在人们眼里治安状况恶化的纽约市竟然是美国以人口数量排名的十来个超大城市里面治安状况最好的大都市。洛杉矶，旧金山，芝加哥，西雅图等等都比纽约犯罪率高治安恶劣。
但要是说起无家可归者，种族歧视，枪击案，零元购，街道尿味，混杂在垃圾中的僵尸吸毒人群和毒品泛滥问题，美国城市根本无法评比，大家都一样糟。
那部纪录片采访无家可归者的发现，没有居住住所不是导致无家可归者大军群体浩大的原因，那只是无家可归者的特征之一，真正导致无家可归的根源，就像片中一个女性无家可归者所说的，是吸毒成瘾。住在西雅图无家可归者聚集的肮脏街道的红红绿绿帐篷里的这位年青白人女士说：“我从未遇到过一位无家可归者不是瘾君子”，纪录片采访者，一位令人尊敬的资深白人记者不太确定他所听到的，于是两次询问那位女士你肯定他们都是瘾君子吗？“100%，绝对都是，没有一位不是！” 女士强调道。
不遗余力推行大麻合法化的民主党应该听听这个四年前的纪录片中这段对话，美国使用大麻的人口众多，仅仅为了捞取这些人的选票政府就不断推进毒品减罪化和大麻合法化，结果就是瘾君子越来越多，毒品越来越成为政府提供给社会的资源，成瘾者越来越多地离开就业机构走向街头，无家可归者和具有精神症状者越来越多地充斥街头，犯罪率越来越高。
美国政府诱导民众吸毒？对，还诱导抢劫商家。因为这样可以变大案为小案，把统计数据搞漂亮，不至于祸及政客选举。
如果在从前，我一定不相信美国政府会这么干。但是，美国正在发生的社会现实不断证明政府部门对这一切起着推动者的作用。讽刺的是，纽约市的治安在美国十几个特大城市里排名较好或许还跟政府对毒品的开放政策有关。
纽约市政府今年在社区街道投放的免费毒品售卖机可以说是其中最直接的证据，这种售卖机无需花钱，里面提供许多种毒品，包括烈性高的毒品，如快克等五六样一般人叫不上名字的化学毒品，以及针头，注射器，吸毒后乱性用的避孕套，吸毒过量后的解药，等等。对于那些毒品人们一抢而光，政府工作人员及时补充毒品，确保免费售卖机正常运转。全然不顾街道上行驶的校车和街上玩耍的儿童。
政府说这是在帮助吸毒者获得安全的毒品，不至于合用注射器和使用来路不明的劣质毒品，全然不提这样汇集各自各样的毒品进行免费发放就是在鼓励年青人尝试级别更高危害更大的毒品。结果就是把不吸大麻的变成大麻瘾君子，把大麻爱好者变成注射毒品的瘾君子。至于那些深度吸毒随时都有可能死去的末端僵尸，政府早就提供了专业护士亲自帮助他们注射高剂量毒品的注射站，不仅大城市有，中小城市也积极配套设置。
美国毒品、精神不稳定和无家可归者的话题永远说不完，抢劫和枪击也是如此。美国议员提议中国邮件不再应该免税（美国法律规定价格不到八百美元的邮包一律不得課税，但是反华议员提议从中国来的邮件必须課税，否则违法）。这就是无数法律制定者的奇葩之处，因为他们同时规定抢劫商店在一千美元以下不算繁杂。合法邮购可能因为没有交税而犯罪，非法抢劫店铺却能无罪。
所以，问题的重点在于，那部纪录片四年后的西雅图，或者美国各大城市，具体情况是好转了还是恶化了，吸毒人员的队伍壮大了还是缩小了？答案很可惜，一起都越来越恶化了。从下面附上视频后面近来的读者评论内容也很容易得出这样的结论，更何况是我们亲眼目睹的社会现实。
加拿大和欧洲也在积极复制这样的美国民主价值观。进入加拿大的城市，道路破败商场毫无特色，制作成加拿大国旗国徽枫叶标志的大麻糖却很有特色，误食中毒甚至发生不幸的新闻屡见不鲜。吸毒者和无家可归者越来越多，总统和政客说话越来越虚假，政府越来越回避社会问题，转而用一个一个战争和制裁围堵话题转移人们的注意力。金灿荣说他总是和美国人吵架，你们得了癌症自己治，别老骂中国。这就是西方捍卫的民主价值观，我们的问题不许你谈论，我们骂你打你甩锅给你你必须背上，不然就是挑战民主价值观。
这样的纪录片油管有许多，另外一个著名的系列题目是 Bay Area Homeless - Concern or Crisis Part 1 (美国湾区无家可归者，忧虑与危机)，它的年份更久，五年跨度经历了特朗普和拜登两党的政府，美国政府的选择是无视和放任自流。最近一个马来西亚华裔的视频题目是 “2023美国加州完蛋了！赶紧带着孩子逃离吧”。
这样的例子举不过来。美国主流媒体在干什么？在为了政府选举编造虚假统计数据，一个简单例子是彭博社把华为通讯设备上一个纽扣大的元件指控为中国政府的间谍发射器，用于向中国发射美国用户机密。这样的编篡连基本物理学底线都不要了，纽扣大的发射器能发射跨越太平洋的电波？同样是彭博社，把美国新冠死亡上百万称作民主的胜利，并将美国评选为世界抗疫最成功的典范。最近彭博社一篇关于各国采用人民币支付的经济专家文章故意采用美元支付体系内的人民币支付比例统计说国际贸易中人民币支付并没有增长，权威数据显示人民币只占国际支付的2%。它是怎样造假的呢？因为中东南美和俄罗斯等几十个国家采用人民币支付通过的是中国支付体系，以规避美元霸权制裁的SWIFT支付体系，彭博社经济专家就故意只统计SWIFT支付体系里的人民币支付比例，并且把巨额美元超印和金融泡沫当分母，以此来抹去其他国家正在进行的国际贸易中的人民币对各国本币贸易数据。这样的经济专家完全是英国经济学人杂志的传统控制媒体数据手段，然而他们一直被西方媒体以权威论称和广泛采用。
在纪念里根总统112周年诞辰的会议上一位美军高官提问基辛格如何看待中美发展的未来，基辛格是这样回答的：正在飞速发展的中国必然成为世界上唯一一个超级大国，美国正因为种族和贫富分化而失去凝聚力。
漫长或者迅速，或迟或早，放任社会恶化而不进行治疗意味着前景只能是走向死亡，百年大变局不是从外部改变西方，而是那些一意孤行走在这样的绿迈（green mile）之路所注定带来的惊天变局。

As a young person who's been in the system. Justice and consequences are part of healing. Getting arrested and the treatment and counseling I received were the greatest things to happen to me. What these council people are doing is the complete opposite of compassion, it's enabling and they are contributing to the deterioration and eventual destruction of these people's lives. It is not compassion.

Lived in WA state for 52 years. Left in 2022 because of these problems. Seattle is no longer the beautiful little Emerald City it once was, and the crime is spreading out to surrounding communities. It is due in large part to the local govt...being a sanctuary city and allowing drugs is definitely killing Seattle.

I lived in Seattle for about 10 years, and have now been gone for quite awhile. Drugs and homelessness were an issue then, but not like this. Seeing all the places I know and loved, and what was such a beautiful and amazing city… this broke my heart.

Funny, they mention the word "embarrassed" in the movie. Same thing happened to me. I was stationed in Bremerton in the navy in the early 80's and went to Seattle every weekend on the ferry. I don't like cities much but Seattle was different. It was clean, safe, somewhat upscale. I loved it. After I left the navy and went back home to New York to make my life, Seattle always remained in the back of my mind. After about 20 or so years of marriage with three children, I decided to take the entire family out to the Seattle area in 2012 to show it off to my family with the intent of possibly retiring there. The first stop we made was to Pike Place Market, we were inundated by homeless people begging for money...I was mortified. I expected this in New York City, but not here. It was happening everywhere we went. People walking around like zombies. We went to the fountain in Seattle Center and one homeless man was walking up to people asking for money. He smelled so bad we had to leave, everyone left. The rest of the state and the national parks are still beautiful but I was completely embarrassed having talked up the area for years to my wife and kids. Needless to say, seeing that this type of governing seems to have spread to the entire state, I will not be retiring there. I don't feel sorry for a lot of the people complaining in this movie because I know damn well they voted these politicians into office.

Such an important and powerful documentary. Thank you so much, this should be watched by every single person & I envy Rhode Island so much with their codac facility. I wish there were one where I live that had one facility similar to this, for someone I love and hold close to my heart. Getting the public informed about the drug problem is the first step. Treatment and rehab is next. I will start to look into these medications and pray to god they can help. Seeing those people tell their stories gives me hope that things can be better in the future. Went to Seattle last year and things seemed much cleaner and safer compared to when I went during Covid. Glad the new Mayor is turning things around.

This breaks my heart. I truly hope this once great city gets it together. I lived in Seattle for 10 years from 1991 to 2001. It was a beautiful city with the feel of a town.
I always thought that I would return someday. That thought is gone. It makes me very sad.

Bravo. Well written documentary. Not just exposing the problems and aftermath, but also viable solutions. I'm not going to write a big long comment about my city or what I've experienced. I just think it's great that they got to the heart of the matter. That addiction, homelessness, mental illness, crime and the effects it has on cities and general quality of life for everyone. Even if you think it doesn't effect you personally. It does. I think everyone should do something about it.

This was an excellent piece. The mayor and city counsel said it all, they clearly are on a separte planet. If the people who were repeatedly arrested were actually convicted and therefore receiving services through the system, many would be accountable and might be able to get off the street. But to continually send the same people with the same problems back out on the streets to keep doing the same things is abusive to them. It's not compassion, but turning a blind eye to their obvious issues. Shame on Seattle and every other big city following their example

Visited from Houston last weekend. Stayed in Belltown. Walked around the surrounding neighborhoods & took lots of public transit. I definitely felt like I needed to keep moving, definitely saw needles close to my hotel. Like a lot of cities, the divide between shiny tourism and the harsh reality of addiction is a living contradiction. It's really a shame - Seattle itself is truly beautiful, or it could be, if real solutions were put into action.

Seattle is my home. I was born there. My mom used to work at a law firm in pioneer square in the mid 90’s underneath was a toy store and she would take me to work with her everyday and it was bustling and beautiful. Took her back to Seattle for her birthday for a day cruise in 2019 we had to walk right past her old job to get to the waterfront and we weeped at how disgusting and run down it has become. Iso love the work that you do, it's moving and you not only point out the good in people but you show things that people either don't know or care about. Everything can change when we all face the problems like drug addiction, which people tend to ignore. I lost two of my guardianship foster children so, it hits home. It's sad how Seattle has been mismanaged. Defending the police didn't help. I'm sad over the loss of our Constitution and sad that simple laws are ignored. Like San Francisco never going to visit Seattle either.

This is my first time watching this although it has been recommended to me. I was a long time homeless person but not an addict. I hid and kept wherever I slept clean. I avoided the camps. I got housing, dealt with my worker’s compensation case and now am working full time and have been for years. I had no criminal cases. The problem is drugs. If they don’t address the drug problem, they can get housing, steal, get in trouble and back on the streets. They need to address the substance abuse and mental health issues or it just becomes another revolving door.

Two things many don't realize about the situation; One, most of the money earmarked to help the homeless never makes it there and winds up in politicians' pockets. Two, many homeless people simply do not want help, because it would mean having to give up their unrestricted addictive habits.

I was stationed in Seattle for 3 X 6 weeks in 1980 and loved that vibrant and beautiful place so much so, that I wanted to emigrate to that city. I ended up in Atlanta instead and from there on to Ft. Lauderdale/Miami. Revisited Seattle in 2016 and was saddened over how much it had deteriorated.

MAT programs are beyond important for opiate addicts, and getting locked up is important for all drug addicts. No better place to get clean (besides perhaps inpatient programs but those are expensive). I know the prisons in CA offer substance abuse classes and pretty sure suboxone and methadone in cases. People would be surprised how much “rehabilitation” there is within the CDCR.
Suboxone gave me my life back after 8-10 years of opiate pill addiction. I know many people who could say the same, and a couple who used methadone with great success too (but methadone gets you high still, suboxone doesn’t really do so except maybe first few doses depending on their size). Suboxone is probably better at blocking other opiates too, Buprenorphine binding strength is no joke. That said, I know for some methadone is the better option.
I pray for Seattle and all of the west coast. Used to want to move up that way long ago… that sure has changed. Very sad to see. Having been in the prison system myself, I know the benefits that come with getting locked as an addict and it’s a shame Seattle (like CA) refuses to punish people for certain crimes.
